Spend the day fossil hunting with Curator of Paleobotany Caroline Strömberg at Stonerose Interpretive Center in Republic, Wash. This iconic site is known for amazing plant fossils. Visitors often find intricate fossil leaves and seeds, and sometimes even preserved flowers and insects! Includes a picnic lunch and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Stonerose fossil collections.

Delve into the Green River Canoe with Peter Lape

More than 50 years ago, a 25-foot-long dugout canoe was found eroding in a muddy bank of the Green River. It became part of the Burke's collection in 1963 and was identified as a type of river canoe called s.dəxʷìł (hunting canoe) in 2016. Join Curator of Archaeology Peter Lape to view and learn about the original Green River Canoe. Venture to the historic ASUW Shell House, home of the Burke’s Green River Canoe replica made in collaboration with the Muckleshoot Tribe, then enjoy a picnic lunch from Chef John Sundstrom of Lark and an opportunity to paddle the replica canoe.

The winner of this item will receive a special tour of the Theodor Jacobsen Observatory for up to ten people and a special "fireside chat" with Bruce Balick, UW emeritus professor of astronomy and Burke volunteer, to explore topics of astronomical interest — the birth of the sun, the extinction of dinosaurs, or Big Bang cosmology.

Join Curator of Mammals Sharlene Santana and Mammalogy Collections Manager Jeff Bradley to stalk small flying mammals in the heart of Seattle. Discuss your bat tracking strategy over dinner and drinks at Duke’s Seafood, then go into stealth mode as you organize yourselves into optimal bat-watching position. See bats foraging at dusk around Green Lake and use an ultrasound detector to eavesdrop on them.

High-Tech Hummingbirds with Alejandro Rico-Guevara

Join Alejandro in his lab at the UW's Life Sciences building to see experimental arrays like high-speed cameras, a hummingbird flight arena, and respirometry devices, which enable researchers to study how these birds fly, feed, and use energy. Also, join Alejandro at the Burke for a picnic lunch and behind-the-scenes look at photogrammetry and multispectral photography set-ups designed to study bird adaptations and signals.

Digging into the Fossil Collections with Greg Wilson Mantilla

Spend the afternoon at the Burke with Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology Greg Wilson Mantilla. Receive a personalized tour of the collections and hear first-hand stories about digging up the T. rex skull in Hell Creek, Mont., and discovering MORE dinosaurs last summer. Try your hand at sediment sorting - you may find some tiny teeth or fossils. You'll never know what you'll uncover on a special afternoon at the Burke's paleontology prep lab.
